Today's Daily: born to create

September 15

Hey Reader,

Recently, a famous couple lost their various lucrative deals because they didn’t deliver the content they promised they would.

My ego felt a little smug.

Because I’ve written consistent content for years.

Guess status isn't everything huh?

Then my higher self gently reminded me how much I avoid writing even now.

How much I struggle to believe in my ideas.

How much the other parts of my life pull my focus in every direction.

What creating requires

Creating something from start to finish takes consistent dedication and practice.

It can’t be bought with money.

Or faked with influence.

Sure, money can buy support so you have more time to create.

But that doesn't guarantee the creation happens.

Creation demands vulnerability.

The best and worst of us.

It requires showing up.

That we try.

Retry.

And try again.

Most people don’t let themselves go there.

This is no easy task

It’s not easy creating when we have bullies like shame or perfectionism pestering us.

It takes a lot of lowering the bar.

letting go

opening up

learning

believing

Creating requires starting and that can be the hardest part.

I wonder if it would’ve helped that couple to know that you can complete a big project by writing one paragraph a day.

Maybe it would've felt more manageable.

Then I felt compassion wash over me.

The good news

You don’t need money or influence to be creative.

You might already be more creative than this powerful couple who couldn’t come up with ideas or content.

The only person who can stop us from creating is us.

You were born to create!

PS. I care deeply about giving the marginalized and unseen the tools to embrace and share their voice (and I know you do, too). That’s why I’m excited to share Becky Mollenkamp's new Feminist Founders podcast. Her long-form interviews inspire you to rethink how to approach business in the best possible ways. I like hearing different perspectives in this space and if you are too give it a listen: Apple Podcasts, Spotify.

Good Quote

“One of the things most worth noting in a creative recovery is our reluctance to take seriously the possibility that the universe just might be cooperating with our new and expanded plans.”

Good Question

Move up the ladder to higher vibrations by writing at the top of a blank page:

What does my heart feel called to create?

and see what flows from your pen. No judgment or editing.

February's ThemeThe Power of Nervous System Regulation Is self-help helping—or just making us anxious? There’s a lot I’ve been questioning lately about the self-help space. How the obsession with individualism can pull us away from the community we actually need. How actual mental health isn’t about feeling good 24/7 or eliminating discomfort but about having an appropriate response to life’s challenges. And then there’s this: What if self-help is feeding our anxiety instead of alleviating...

February's ThemeThe Power of Nervous System Regulation November 12 Hi Reader, For thousands of years, men have been the custodians of the knowledge of meditation. So of course it’s designed to meet their needs. It was taught mostly by celibate, single Monks living in remote areas. Sitting still in silence for hours was doable in those conditions. Possibly even because they still had women who cooked and cleaned for them. Who knows. What I do know is expecting a woman in the thick of raising...

February's ThemeThe Power of Nervous System Regulation May 13 Hi Reader, Not gonna lie. I struggle with the pressure to do it all: clean the house, cook dinner, raise a toddler, grow a business, and pursue creativity. This is impossible and unrealistic for one person. Yet, in a society that leaves families to fend for themselves, it's no wonder many of us feel on our own. Even if you're not a parent, you can still relate to getting overloaded by expectations, pressures, rules, and tasks. I...
